A large spacecraft I designed.  Created for heavy personal transport and medium cargo transport.  It has large fuel stores as while in space a small burst will keep the boat traveling in the same direction for an indefinite amount of time, so it is good for interplanetary travel as well. As far as armaments go,  It is lightly armored with many anti-fighter missiles and a few heavier charges.  It is not capable of destroying a ship the same size unless it uses all of it's ammunition on it, so it is accompanied by fighters and destroyers on occasion if it travels through possibly hostile space.

A character design for a female, armed warrior.  She has plate armor with a chain mail skirt for extra protection.  Her arms and thighs are lightly covered to allow less weight and greater mobility.  Being that she doesn't use a shield she relies heavily on her ability to evade attacks and quickly land them.  Her sword is gnarled and worn but she still sharpens the blade so a blow landed on an unarmed foe would be very nasty indeed.   She also sports a scarf for those deadly cold breezes.

A design for a vertical take off aerial vehicle.  It has two helicopter like rotor blades on each side which it uses to propel itself through the sky.  It has two tubes coming out of it's end which can extend out to balance it in certain situations.  Furthermore, the legs can extend out for more rear weight.

I wanted to do some monsters to go along with the halloween feeling in the air.  I went with the theme of human experimentation.  The first two are more obviously human, and for the last one I wanted to get away from the human figure a bit more.

I don't usually do fan art, but when I do this is what it looks like.

A design for an old style of car.  I also design the type myself too.

A dinosaur like guy.  It has hard plates on it's back for when think gnarly hide isn't enough and two horns protruding from it's chin to keep enemies away.

An experimental walking unmanned vehicle designed for urban combat situations.  Its main weapons are the duel anti tank rifles mounted on its "head."  The guns have a slow rate of fire compared to machine guns but make up for this with alternating fire,  20 mm rounds, and relatively low recoil.  This armament is dwarfed even by outdated tank units, but allows it to preform specific tasks.  It is designed to have a taller firing position to be able to strike targets over piles of rubble that tanks would be unable to hit.  It can also stand up at full height and lock it's legs in place and still be able to have a wide range of fire do the the guns being mounted on the "head" and the "feet" having treads allowing it a 360 degree of motion without even moving the legs.  If a larger gun was mounted considerable decreases would be shown in firing height, as larger turrets cause more recoil, which would in return require a much larger base that would further decrease mobility.  Its other armaments consist of: high speed missiles, vertical launch anti-air missiles, and chaff rockets.

This is a laboratory I designed.  I wanted to do an interior for a change to continue practicing my perspective.  It also proved to be good practice in terms of lighting.  It's more lit up than it should be but I wanted everything to be very visible.  It's still obvious that the stasis tube is the main light source and has some interesting lighting effects.

This is a weapon set design for an race of evil soulless humans.  Pretty straightforward weapons, the far left is the a pole arm the Scythe of the Soulless, and the one in the center top on the left is designed to get around shields.

If the singular eye didn't give it away it's a cyclops.  It would live in a desert like climate with lots of open space for it to lumber around and lots of burnt sienna rock formations and sandy areas for it to blend in with. It has a hard armored eyelid to protect it's only source of sight from damage. Another significant trait is the odd set of thighs that accommodate the heavy weight of the beasts upper body and allow for the legs to be in a bent position with significantly less strain than a standard set of bipedal legs.

An odd creature encased in a thick gel.  Above is how it looks without the gel covering it.  It's sort of exposed muscle with a thin layer of skin like matter covering it.  The gel helps protect it's exposed tissue and acts like a thick layer of hide.  It's more of an abomination than anything and doesn't have a place in nature.

The final turnaround.  He's sort of a serial killer, definitely a creepy looking guy.  He's wearing a mask with Kevlar nailed to it and a Kevlar duster with multiple layers.  He gets shot a lot.  The left eye is supposed to look more sad while the right is angry representing his mixed feelings.

Another good ol' turn around.  I wanted to throw a character in the mix to keep anatomy in mind during all this weird perspective practice.  Anyways here's the line, I'm going to start coloring soon.

The village in a gorge of violet hued rock.  Little metal is used since they want to keep the structures as light as they can.  They are held up by a mass of supports all going different directions and tied together so each one supports another making them surprisingly sturdy.  Needless to say fire is avoided.

This is a boss class creature.  So far It's being called the Poison Flame Drake.  It gets it's name from the violet flame it emits which does little incendiary damage compared to normal flames, but instead inflicts a life draining poison through the singed skin.  It produces this flame by spitting flammable gasses from an opening in it's throat and snicking the tips of it's tongue together to create a spark.  It also has a powerful tail, bite, and set of claws.  An average sized person would be a bit taller than it's shoulder.

I've been messing around with perspective a bit lately.  This is a study in two point I did.  It's a dark sci-fi city.  Building it absorbed all the planets resources, so anyone outside the city lives poor lives, not to mention the wildlife which is mostly extinct.  Since there isn't anywhere else to live the buildings have to keep getting taller to keep up with the population and eventually a stabilizing mechanism was created that allowed building parts to float to keep from falling over.

This is a medieval wagon designed to help in scaling walls of fortified castles and such.  It's rather big so it's being pulled by two large creatures, but a team of horses could replace them or a company of soldiers with a few design tweaks.  It has a compartment that can fit a group of men so they don't have to worry about getting shot by an arrow on the way to the wall at least.  The carrier creatures are heavily armored with slabs of iron so they are well protected, and when the wagon is parked next to the wall they are either released or simply aren't of any concern as now the defending soldiers have men climbing the ladders to contend with.  Furthermore the wagon can drive along the wall to drop men off at lesser guarded spots.

Here are some arms for Slot Bot.  The first one is basically a slab of iron on a steel cable that would spin around and smash stuff, but could also be wound up and thrown and reeled back in.  Next to the right is a fan chain saw weapon.  It's basically 5 chain saws lined up like a common ceiling fan.  Unnecessary?  Yes.  Middle left is the standard arm, it allows grabbing, punching all the fun stuff one can do with an arm. To the right of that is a cannon.  It's pretty devastating and would probably be the highest difficulty armament.  Bottom left is a shock gun.  It jolts out a low voltage spread of electrical currents that do little damage but has a large hit box.  Lastly is the Nerf weapon, a stuffed bunny head puncher.  Obviously the least effective of the bunch and what one hopes to be going against.

The illustration of Slot Bot is shown with the standard arm and shock gun.

This a robot I'm working on.  I wanted to get a few vehicles under my belt, and I thought this may be a stretch but probably qualifies.  It's supposed to be a obstacle of sorts that people trapped in a Colosseum would have to attack/ evade in order to free themselves.  I'm picturing it sitting in the middle of an arena motionless and the player has to go and pull the handle to trigger the slot machine and defeat it to open the door.  Depending on the results of the reels the bot's arms would change and would be more/less difficult.  I'm thinking about calling it SlotBot.  Clever right?

This is a space station I designed.   It's part of a collaboration I did with three other talented concept artists who designed characters etc.  The premise was to have a place where races could come and trade their resources with other planets easily.  The station has an elevator connecting it and the planet so people coming to it wont have to break the atmosphere to interact with those living beneath.  Furthermore other planets have set up shop here so one may find many different goods from many different planets.  It's a pretty good set up.

This is my colored version.  I don't have a permanent name yet so I've just been calling it "walking city."  I fixed up the perspective a tad and blocked in the rest of open parts like I said.  All the painting was done in Photoshop.

Saturday, February 25, 2012

This is my final line drawing for my walking city.  I traced over my pencil drawing which was on tabloid paper with two 9.6 x 8.5 sheets of tracing paper and a size 1 micron.  I might have to go over some of the lines toward the middle in Photoshop but other than that I'd say it's a pretty effective technique if you want to do a traditional drawing.  I left some parts blank because their either going to be covered in dust from the desert or I planned on copying a part of my drawing and sliding it into place.  The legs in the back ground are going to be more hinted at in atmospheric perspective to really make this thing look big. Now I just gotta paint it.

This weekend is turning out to be my busiest work wise so far.  I'm working on the most labor intensive piece I've decided to do so far for Advanced Illustration and a 5 panel comic page for Digital Illustration 2.  The piece for Advanced Illustration is a giant 6-legged machine with a city on its back.  Im working it 17x9.6.  Just the pencil drawing took 6 hours to do not including preliminary sketching.  The comic page takes you through the hunt of an amazon.  Im trying out new brushes and so far am getting pretty good results.

Here's an update on my redesigned Tog.  He has definitely retained his girth, but looks a lot more intimidating and creepy now.  I'll put up a colored one soon.

Saturday, January 28, 2012

This little guys name is Tog.  His passion in life, as you could have easily guessed, is eating.  For the most part eating people.  This was my first project for my advanced illustration class and I'm kinda iffy about it.  I started thinking about how you often see people kill giant dragons or other larger than life creatures and it just looks completely outrageous and impossible.  So I wanted to design something that was still relatively big but provided a bit more realistic challenge.

I think I met that criteria.  He definitely looks slow at least.  I could see a well trained knight or what have you having a difficult fight with Tog and coming out victorious.  I do however think he came out looking too humorous.  He is supposed to live in a cave as a wizards pet and protect him him from any invaders,  so the atmosphere would be pretty creepy.  Starting Tog I had more of a flabby docile creature in mind, but now I'm rethinking that, and I plan on creating a more serious and scarier version in the future.

This is my color version of the previously mentioned voodoo character.  It felt to me like he was a someone who would have a lot of earthy colors in his clothing.  I figured he would live in or near a swamp and I wanted him to have a feel of decay about him.

This is a turn around for a voodoo priest I created.  I originally drew a sketch of him in my book while I had some free time(I don't know how that happened), and I liked it enough to consider taking it to a color stage.  I included some provincial weapons aswell.
